Common Sense Gun Safety

     From 2004 through 2013, there were more gun deaths in South Carolina than there were U.S. combat fatalities in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars combined. That is simply unacceptable.

     Adopting Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs), closing the Charleston and Gun Show Loopholes, banning military-style assault weapons and passing “No Fly; No Buy” legislation are critical and necessary steps to keeping guns out of the hands of violent criminals, especially domestic abusers, terrorists and the mentally unstable. Furthermore, we know these steps enjoy broad support across South Carolina with 84% of South Carolinians supporting Universal Background Checks and 81% supporting “No Fly; No Buy.”

     By failing to take action on these and other common sense gun safety reforms, Congress is ignoring the voice of the people. If elected, I will make sure you are heard.

     While I support responsible gun ownership and will uphold the Second Amendment, I believe we can respect the rights of gun owners while doing more to keep our communities safe.

I support common sense legislation that will save lives, such as:
  • Requiring a criminal background check with every gun sale;
  • Red flag laws that allow family members or law enforcement to ask a judge to temporarily restrict gun access for people who show dangerous warning signs that they are a threat to themselves or others;
  • Restricting gun access by terrorists, violent criminals, domestic abuse offenders, and those under restraining orders;
  • Keeping weapons of war – such as assault-style weapons and large capacity magazines – out of our neighborhoods;
  • Limiting easy access to accessories that increase the lethality of guns, such as silencers and bump stocks.

I will oppose the gun lobby’s efforts to …
  • allow guns almost anywhere;
  • allow people to carry guns openly in public with no permit and no training.

I will support efforts to help survivors of gun violence heal physically and psychologically through universal access to health and mental health care and specialized victim services.
